The Mountain Apollo is one of the most endangered butterfly species in Germany. It is the only non-tropical butterfly which is listed in the Washington Treaty for the Protection of Endangered Species. Its official name Apollo paranasius vinningensis is an indication for the rock terraces of Winningen. This is the region where most of the Mountain Apollos live to the north of the Alps. The caterpillars mainly live on the white Stonecrop (sedum album) which grow everywhere on our dry walls and rocks. On the first hot days in June, the beautiful butterflies hatch out which fly so dizzily as if they drank too much of our Uhlen wine. In the last few years the population of the Mountain Apollo has increased enormously, which is a sign for an intact ecosystem.
