It started 400 million years ago. The collision of the continents compressed the slit which was washed up in the South Seas near the shores of the Old Red Continent. Slate was created. In millions of years of continental drift tremendous forces lifted and shifted the slate from the interior of the earth. Today the slate rock rises up out of the Moselle valley. What a great achievement of our ancestors it was to break stones here in arduous manual labour, to build walls and terraces. They created a unique artificial landscape. You can say that the vines act as a medium as they transfer the character of the stony soil to the glass so that you can taste the prehistoric sea.

This is how the exciting fascination of the terroir "Heymann-Löwenstein" is created in the uniqueness of every single vineyard.
